Lesson 01.02

Logic (Comes from God)

We will be examining logic more in depth in the next section but please understand that logic ultimately comes from God. This is because God is the author of all proper thought.  God is without self-contradiction.  God is perfect in all his ways.
Logic is a conceptual action based upon transcendent absolutes.  In other words, logic is true regardless of who is speaking, where they are, or when they are. Logic is not dependent upon the person's ability to think. Logic is independent of what a person is or what he believes.  More on this and the next lesson.
Logic belongs to God.  It is, ultimately, a reflection of God's perfect thinking and absolute nature.  God is perfectly consistent and perfectly logical in all but he says and does.  Therefore, logic has its place in the Christian walk and, of course, in critical thinking.
God said be transformed by the renewing of your mind (Rom. 12:2). We are told to love God with our minds (Matt. 22:37), to let our minds dwell on pure and lovely things (Phil. 4:8), and to set our minds on the things above (Col. 3:2). God never tells us to stop thinking. On the contrary, he tells us to use our minds.  We are commanded to believe and trust, and we are also told to think. Since God is the greatest thinker and he tells us use our minds, then we are free to do so without shame and with confidence.  Paul did this.

  • "And according to Paul’s custom, he went to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and giving evidence that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, "This Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you is the Christ," (Acts 17:2-3).
  • "So he was reasoning in the synagogue with the Jews and the God-fearing Gentiles, and in the market place every day with those who happened to be present," (Acts 17:17).

God is the author of truth.  God thinks perfectly and always logically.  Therefore, logic helps expose error and establish truth.  Logic belongs to the domain of the Christian and as you will see in later lessons, it can be used repeatedly and thoroughly to expose the error of the unbelievers thinking.
Critical thinking is a godly pursuit.
