Basically, I was raised in a nominally Christian home, was mixed up in the occult, got tricked into being saved, attended Calvary Chapel, started studying cults and apologetics, went to college, then seminary, was a pastor, and now a web author.
My name is Matthew Slick. I am 47, married,
am blessed with children, and am a Christian. I graduated from Christ College Irvine (Lutheran) in Irvine CA, in 1987 with a bachelors in Social Science. In 1991 I received a masters of divinity from Westminster Theological Seminary (Presbyterian) in Escondido CA.
I was a pastor for 2 years and am ordained. I am Reformed in doctrine, amillennial in eschatology, contemporary in worship, and believe in the spiritual gifts. (It's tough finding a church that has the same nuances of theological flavor that I have.)
Presently, I am working as desktop computer support at a major corporation computer corporation.
What got me started in apologetics was something a friend of mine read to me at a Bible study. He showed me a quote from Joseph Smith the founder of Mormonism. I was so outraged at the quote that I was determined to study and see who and what kind of a person this Joseph Smith was. Here is the quote:
"God is in the still small voice. In all these affidavits, indictments, it is all of the devil--all corruption. Come on! ye prosecutors! ye false swearers! All hell, boil over! Ye burning mountains, roll down your lava! for I will come out on the top at last. I have more to boast of than ever any man had. I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam. A large majority of the whole have stood by me. Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I. The followers of Jesus ran away from Him; but the Latter-day Saints never ran away from me yet..." (Joseph Smith from the Mormon book, History of the Church Vol. 6, pp. 408-409)
Such arrogance quickly reveals that this man was not man of God. No Christian can ever boast that he or she has ever done more than Jesus to keep a church together. The Bible says that pride goes before a fall. One month after Joseph Smith said this, a mob killed him for his involvement in destroying a printing press that had been publishing harmful information about him and his "church."
Anyway, that is what started my journey into apologetics. From this rude introduction to Mormonism I started studying under Jerry and Marian Bodine at MelodyLand in Anaheim California. At that time they were working at the Christian Research Institute with Dr. Walter Martin (Jerry has since gone to be with the Lord).
After several months of study, Chuck, a friend of mine, and I started a swap meet ministry. Every Saturday for two and a half years, we would set up a booth at a local swap meet and pass out tracts about Christianity, Mormonism, Jehovah's Witnesses, Evolution, Christian Science, etc. We would get into countless debates with people and it was there that I fine tuned my apologetics.
Next came a phone ministry. My new room mate and I put an add in the local Penny Saver that said, "Learn the truth about Mormonism, Jehovah's Witnesses, Christian Science, and Unity. Call xxx-xxxx." Needless to say, we got a lot of calls.
Then I started beach evangelism. I dressed up like a mod, pierced my left ear, and hung around the boardwalk passing out tracts and witnessing. It was very interesting.
All the while I was doing this, I would stop every Mormon missionary and Jehovah's Witness I would see (I would even follow them to see what houses they had appointments at, then I would go back to those houses later and witness.). The Mormon missionaries were told not to talk to me...I wonder why?
From there I started teaching Bible studies and began putting my notes down on paper. In college I first tackled the computer and began writing everything on it.
This website is a product of all that writing, of seminars, of preaching, teaching Bible studies, and plain old studying. I hope you like what you find here.
This bio is here only because people have e-mailed me and asked about my background.
