Mitochondrial DNA is the DNA found in the mitochondria organelles of cells which are located in the cytoplasm–that substance between the nucleus and outer membrane. Organelles are like mini-organs in the cell that perform various functions, and within these organelles are mitochondria in which resides the DNA. Generally, DNA is inherited only through the mother.
