I tried Christianity once

by | Oct 19, 2009 | Answers for Seekers, Christian Theology

You don’t “try” Christianity like a shirt to see if it fits. It’s not a club you joined for a little while and check it out to see if it suits you. Instead, Christianity is a commitment to Christ himself. It means that you have trusted in Him for the forgiveness of your sins – not just to see if things get better with your friends or job.

Unfortunately, too many people think that Christianity is a bunch of rules or regulations like going to church, dressing right, talking right, not seeing movies, etc.  So they followed the so-called “rules” for a while and it didn’t work out. So, they leave and say they tried Christianity once. Well, that’s not what it is.

Instead, Christianity is a commitment to Christ who died to forgive people of their sins. It is the acceptance that what he may require of you might be difficult. You don’t try Jesus to see if things get better in your life. They might not be. You don’t give Jesus a shot at helping you out if it doesn’t work out what you want then you abandon him. It is like that. That is what it means to be a Christian.

Furthermore, the Bible says that once you are saved, you are never the same again; you are a new creature (2 Cor. 5:17). If you have gone back to your old ways, then most probably you were never saved (1 John 2:19). If, however, you were saved, then God won’t let you stay in rebellion for long. He will deal with you in whatever way is necessary to bring you back into fellowship with Him.

Did you become a Christian by going to church or by asking Jesus to forgive you of your sins? The latter makes you a Christian, the former doesn’t.

You don’t try Christianity to see if it works, or if your life gets better. You receive Christ because you trust what he has done for you on the cross so you can escape the judgment of God upon you for your sin.
