Words mean what they mean in context – All

by | Feb 11, 2015 | Apologetics, Tables and Charts

Words have a variety of meanings depending upon the context. For example, if I were to say to you that Bob is green, what does that mean? The word green could mean envious, sick, and inexperienced. The context would determine which meaning is intended. Likewise, there are words in Scripture that have a variety of meanings depending on the context. Following is a grid that lists some of the hundreds of instances in the New Testament of the occurrence of the English word “all.” You will see that there are different meanings and categorize them into five. This is important because some Christians unnecessarily restrict various words in order to impose a presupposed theological meaning in a text.

The word “all” is used in at least five different ways. Every Individual (Mark 6:39; Rom. 3:23; 1 Thess. 5:15; 1 Tim. 2:2; ), Not Every Individual (Matt. 2:3; Mark 2:13; Luke 2:1; 21:17; John 10:8; Acts 11:28; 15:22; 21:30; 2 Tim. 4:17; Rev. 13:6), Things (Matt. 3:15; Acts 11:28; 13:39; 16:26; Rom. 1:18; 14:2; 1 Cor. 3:22; 8:6; Col. 1:17; Heb. 2:10; James 1:21; Rev. 4:11), Totality (Acts 1:21; 2 Cor. 4:17; Phil. 1:9; 2 Thess. 1:4; Heb. 2:10; 1 Pet. 1:15; 2 Pet. 3:4; 1 John 5:17; Jude 5), Expression Not People or Things (Mark 5:26; 15:14; Luke 7:35; John 5:18; Acts 1:21; Acts 5:14; Rom. 3:2; 2 Cor. 4:17; Gal. 4:1; Eph. 1:11; 5:27; Phil. 1:9; 1 Tim. 2:2; Jude 5)
